FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. I am worried about tipping over and being in the kayak upside-down.
A. Our kayaks are extremely stable. Capsizes are rare. The kayaks have extremely large cockpits. When a rare capsize occurs, the paddlers will usually fall out before the kayak is completely upside-down. For non-swimmers : remember, your buoyancy jacket will keep you floating. Prior to your departure your guide will fully explain and demonstrate the best way in which to get out of your kayak in the rare event of a capsize.
Q. How easy are the kayaks to paddle?
A. Very easy. Here's why. Sea kayaks are longer than normal kayaks. This decreases the wave drag and so you require less effort to go forward. These kayaks are also fitted with a foot-operated rudder which keeps the kayak going straight. This means your energy is used to propel the kayak forward, not wasted trying to keep it straight.
Q. Can I bring a camera?
A. Yes. Our kayaks are fitted with watertight hatches that will keep your belongings dry. However, while many people have brought cameras on the kayak trip with no problem, there is always an element of risk with cameras and salt water. For this reason Coastal Kayakers does not accept any responsibility for your camera. Should you choose to bring a camera, wrap it in at least two hole-free plastic bags. We have disposable water-proof cameras for sale at our base (great for underwater shots at the waterfall!) We recommend a drybag if possible.
Q. Will I get wet?
A. Yes. You will get wet as this is a water based activity. Most likely you will only get your feet wet getting in and out of the kayak. However if you choose to venture under the waterfall you are very likely to get quite wet.
Q. Will I be cold? (Fall/Winter/Spring)
A. Most people overdress for kayaking. During the summer months shorts, t shirt and a light jacket is sufficient. During the warmer months we suggest a quick drying fabric such as polypropylene to be worn underneath your t shirt and jacket. Generally the buoyancy aid adds extra warmth to your chest and the spraydeck keeps your lower half warm. We supply biscuits and a nice warm drink at the waterfalls.
Q. What if the weather is bad?
A. Coastal Kayakers will cancel any trip if it is unsafe. You will get a full refund if you choose not to postpone it to another day.
